Established in 1892 by Town Meeting, the North Hampton Public Library was first located in the southwest corner of Town Hall. In 1899 the Library trustees began the push for a dedicated Library building in North Hampton. The result was the 1907 stone and stucco Tudor Revival building adjacent to the current Library.

The Portsmouth City Council passed an ordinance creating a public library back in 1881, and the city has had a library ever since. It moved to its current location - an airy, environmentally friendly building - in 2006.

The library offers many programs for children and teens, as well as computer classes, games and puzzles, and movie screenings. Teens have a dedicated room of their own in a corner of the children's section, too.
