Gundalows were the historical equivalent of today’s tractor-trailer rigs, carrying up to 50 tons of cargo between oceangoing schooners (which could not navigate the shallow rivers in the area) and the growing towns in the region.
Today, the nonprofit Gundalow Company uses two gundalows to promote awareness of the maritime heritage and the contemporary coastal environment in the Piscataqua Region. They offer public sails, private charters, special school and youth sails, and a variety of special events.
Children of all ages are welcome aboard the Gundalow, with proper adult supervision, but the Gundalow Company recommends sailing with children over the age of 5. If you are bringing a younger child aboard, the company requests that you bring your own life vest for that child.
